My Vampire Summer Vampire Seasons Book 1 eBook Elle Casey
Elle Casy writes like no other author out there. Her books transport you to other times and places, her characters have an extraordinary amount of depth to them and they easily become your friends or family while you're living in their world. My Vampire Summer is a novella about Iona Candella and her best friend Cheri who along with Iona's mom take a trip to beautiful Sommieres in France. Iona is a bookworm and plans to spend her time in France reading a hundred books on her Kindle but her friend Cheri who's pretty wild has other plans which include getting Iona to come out of her shell and have a bit of fun. They spend their trip roaming around the countryside visiting Sommieres which Mrs. Casey describes in beautiful detail and get to know some of the locals. Cheri meets a handsome young local named Philippe while Iona runs into the mysterious good looking Francois who as it turns out is much more than he appears. An ancient curse, the supernatural, romance, along with action and adventure all wrapped in the beautiful scenery of France makes My Vampire Summer a compelling read.I have a love/hate relationship with novellas. I think it's harder to write a good shorter story than it probably is to write a full novel because you have less pages to flesh everything out on. So I also usually find myself wanting more out of a novella and only a handful of really good authors seem to do the format justice. So with that said let me assure you that Mrs. Casey fits into the love category with her novella. My Vampire Summer reads and feels more like a full novel than a novella, it's actually quite long. Not that I didn't want more, which I did but that's only because the book was so good just like all of her books. She could write a thousand page novel and I'd still want more. I hope My Vampire Fall will be out soon because I'd love to pick up where I left off and see what is in store for Iona next. This was another great Elle Casey book and is just another reason why she's my all time favorite author.

My Vampire Summer Vampire Seasons Book 1 eBook Elle Casey Reviews
I normally don't buy novellas, but I really love this author. I was happy to find it was longer than I expected (approx. 2800 locations)
The story was interesting and I enjoyed the characters. At first Iona seemes a bit boring but further into the book she got a lot more likable and I enjoyed her subtle humor. I adored Cheri's character. Cheri reminds me of Jayne from War of the Fae. Of course, Francois was also great. One of may favorite parts was the "different kind of French" conversation. I also liked Demon Dog -)
The setting was also intriguing. The little French town sounded beautiful and it was a great backdrop for the story. I believe Ms. Casey lives in France and I could see her love for the country in her setting descriptions.
I really loved that Iona had a (I don't leave home without mine!) and the "shout out" to Samantha Young (another great author) made Iona's bookworm characteristic even more realistic.
Overall, I don't love this series as much as War of the Fae, but I will definitely read the rest of the series.
Let me start off first by saying I am a HUGE Elle Casey fan! I've read almost all of her other books including the War of the Fae, Clash of the Otherworlds, Apocalypse, Wrecked, and Reckless and truly loved them all. Seriously five stars across the board. So if this book isn't for you PLEASE don't write off the others, you can't go wrong when reading Elle Casey. A three star review KILLS me, and I almost didn't write a review at all just because I love Elle's books so much it made me feel like a traitor or something. If this had been the first book by Elle that I read I don't know what I'd have rated it, but I really had high expectations and didn't feel like this book met them. I finally decided that if I saw five stars on all Elle's books and this was the first one I read I wouldn't take the time to read the rest of her series which would be a serious shame. So Elle, I'm sorry but I wanted to be totally honest. All in all the book was well written, Elle's ideas were awesome as always, her scenery was fabulous, and her characters were fun and realistic. I honestly think all of my problems with the book would have been solved with an extra hundred pages of Elle Casey fabulousness. Never in the book was I tempted to put it down, and I'm sure I'll read the next one, but as of this moment I'm not dying for it to come out either, which is crazy for me to say about an Elle Casey book.
*Spoiler Alert!*
That said, this was my least favorite book by Elle. I get that it was a novella, but I felt like there wasn't enough time to develop the amount of content included in this book. So much was going on in such a short time frame that it felt a bit forced and unrealistic. I know this is fantasy, but regardless of the outlandish circumstances her characters find themselves in, Elle always writes in a way that is believable and that was lost for me in this book. I loved the city it took place in and was thrilled to find out it was a real city, a real church, and the thing inside the church was real as well! I felt sucked in, but three quarters of the way through I was left wishing she'd written a full length book and really developed the story line in a way that felt more natural. An example being Francois trying to tell Iona what he was after two fifteen minute conversations. I get he thought she was the vampire queen, but I was still sitting there going "Yeah right like you'd tell her this soon, and if you really need to tell her this quickly spit it out!"
As always, I loved the characters Elle created, especially Cheri. I loved all the boys, even Alexandre was awesome. I grinned like an idiot reading all their parts in a French accent. Elle is seriously amazing at making you love a character and buy into how she wants you to see them. I'm so used to characters like Jayne and Bryn that are mouthy and opinionated that Iona was a bit hard for me to swallow especially as the lead character. I loved that she's a book worm like me, and she's shy and happy out of the spotlight like I am, but strangely I didn't ever feel connected to her which made it hard to care what happened to her.
In parts of the plot I felt like the characters fell away and there was too much this happened then that happened. For example, in the scene where Marcus is holding Cheri hostage I felt like Francois was weirdly silent about the whole thing. If something horrible is set to happen if Marcus get's the heart, I felt like Francois would be like, "I know you love your friend, but if you do this a lot of people will die! You hear me, die!" I felt like he lamely protested but gave her no reason not to do what Marcus asked. He doesn't seem like a wimp and I wanted him to fight for Cheri's release or to keep Marcus from getting the heart instead of just standing there. Maybe releasing his title was a big thing, but it seemed small in that moment. Also, other than Marcus's tone he never really threatened Cheri in a way that seemed to justify Iona's fear of him. If he were beating Cheri or hanging her over the edge of the wall maybe the imminent danger would have translated for me, but it just didn't the way the story was written. His threats on Iona's mother came across but I expected more psychopathic tendencies to show up in relation to his threats against Cheri.
I guess I just expected more, but like I said earlier I think an extra hundred pages would have taken this book from three to five stars for me. Hope this review doesn't stop anyone from reading Elle's works. I can't stress how great of an author she is.
